Abstract

One in three teenagers will use psychological violence (PV) to resolve conflicts in his/her dating relationships. Over time, most will learn strategies to better interact with their partners without resorting to PV. The study led by Andréanne Lapierre aims to distinguish the teenagers who gradually stop relying on PV and those whose use of PV continues to increase. Her findings reveal a number of common traits among the teenagers who tend to turn to PV, including having been a victim of violence in their romantic relationships in the past 12 months. This new knowledge provides valuable information to help prevent PV from rising among young people.
