At the meeting on April 8, 2021, the board of directors of the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS) approved $117M in awards and grants for 2021–2022.

The FRQS reviewed 1 391 training award applications and will offer 441 new awards this year. In total, $22.2M will be dedicated to new and current training awards.

With respect to career awards, 269 new applications were reviewed, and 142 awards were offered. The amount allocated to career awards, including starting grants, totals $32.8M (new awards and commitments) of which $383 000 is additional support under the economic recovery initiative in response to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020–2021, $2.1M was distributed.

The grants offered for partnership research projects, including international collaborations, total $12.5M of which $2.5M is additional support for economic recovery projects.

Finally, research clusters (including research centres and institutes, thematic networks, strategic clusters and affiliated university centres) will receive $49.9M from the FRQS in 2021–2022. The total budget for research centres is $35.0M with the grants paid out to new research centres and institutes. The thematic networks will receive $11.6M.

In addition to the program funding, the FRQS will contribute $3.9M to initiatives to tackle major societal challenges (Audace intersectoral program, Audace International Québec-Luxemburg, platform to fund programs for intersectoral research on aging – call for solutions and Living Lab).
